Endocrine diseases are common in both cats and dogs, and they involve glands that produce hormones. These are typically very slow starting diseases, but many times are not easily detectable during a physical exam until the disease is overt and significantly progressed. These diseases are typically treatable.
The earlier endocrine diseases are detected, the better we can prevent damage to the body. These diseases are detected with physical examinations, blood and urine analysis, and information the owner provides. Common endocrine diseases include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and hyperadrenocorticism.
